IT Internship Workbook
3   Effective business and research writing
Being able to express yourself clearly in writing is critical to your
professional success. Regardless of whether you
prefer writing code in java or C++ or VB or SQL, you also have to be able to
communicate with ordinary non-technical
human beings, managers, and even human resources personnel.
Despite the modern prevalence of
e-mail and text messaging you eventually need to
prepare more than these brief forms of written communication.
For status memos, reports, proposals,
and the results of product investigations and comparisons
you're going to have to be able to:
- Identify and describe a situation or problem clearly
- Articulately state potential solutions and recommendations
- Substantiate your reasoning and the basis for "facts" you claim.
It's not likely that you have yet been
provided with a method that makes it practical to churn out
well-documented factual "persuasion" documents on a
timely and reliable basis.
In this chapter we focus on
a step-by-step method that guides you to prepare an academic paper.
Academic papers are one of the most formal types of writing. Mastering
their preparation provides benefits for all of your written
communications, including your Assignment 7, your reflective essay.
